site & context specific works

Graduation Show 2008 (mixed media)
Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam 2008
For the graduation show I made three interrelated site-specific works and interventions inside and outside the new building of the Rietveld academy. The absence of the artwork in a designated place and presentation of art in unexpected places confronted the viewers expectations of what art is, encouraging to alter one's perception and take an active part in production of meaning.
"The end of the beginning is the beginning of the end" (mixed media)
Presenting the allotted room to expose my artworks in as it is, by placing three leather armchairs in front of the window wall, the reality outside became framed. The ladder/staircase construction built over and into the fence outside the window, together with the little fold up map, was an invitation for the public to experience the same space from the other side, whereby doing so the notion of audience and performer is shifted. A situation was created, confronting the expectations and providing an opportunity for something else to happen, encouraging encounters, free exchange of ideas and the engagement into the discourse.
"There Here Now" (video installation)
The displacement of the real time image and sound of the working ventilator from the roof, created a meditative image in the staircase on the top floor, uniting the outside and the inside space in the present moment. This brings the attention through the awareness of the ventilation system and the architecture to our presence in the space and breathing.

The Blue Water Project" (food colouring)
By adding a food colouring to the main water supply and making the running water blue in the building during the show, the conceptual water colour and poetic image was created, which also touches on the social, economical and political issues. The entire building became a sculpture exposing its invisible system to capture the imagination by bringing attention to something we take-for-granted.
"Becominga" (coloured water, casted ice)
Vlaams Cultuurhius De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam 2008
During the four days of the graduation show, while the running water was blue as a result of my intervention in Rietveld, at the parallel show dealing with the concept of copy at de Brakke Grond, a self-portrait - a head casted out of ice, of that blue water - was presented. Every morning for four days a new self-portrait out of blue ice was installed in the garden of the gallery, where the visitor will encounter a different sculpture from moment-to-moment, as it would melt away.
